Typography Tuesday ::

Typography is the technique of arranging type, type design and modifying type glyphs. As designers and artists how we incorporate, place and style text within a composition is an important part of conveying the right message to our audience.

The use of type within a document can really drive home the point your trying to make. If properly applied it will take your audiences attention from the general to the specific, acting as a magnifying lens for your message. What’s your typography saying?

Typography is such a beautiful form of artistic expression, I strongly encourage everyone to seek new and creative ways to add some type in your next piece of work.

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to create a trendy 3D anaglyph poster with our beautiful female fashion victim as the center of attention by altering layered artwork in Photoshop.

An anaglyph image is used to provide a stereoscopic 3D effect, when viewed with 2 color glasses (each lens a chromatically opposite color), usually red and cyan. The image which we’ll create actually consists of two very similar images, one red and another a mixture of green and blue, which overlap. The visual cortex of our brain merges the two images into what we finally perceive as a three dimensional scene, composition or in our case an eye popping image of an overly eccentric model.

To gain the full experience of this tutorial you’ll need to dig those old 3D glasses out of the drawer or make a trip to your local party store and pick up a pair.

Before we get started you’ll need the image below:

Images:
• Female Stock – download
• Background Stock – download

Vectors:
• Splatters and Hatches – download
• Floral – download

We’ll be using the background image as the base for the size of this composition. Open the checkered floor background image and make sure that the resolution is set to 300 pixels/inch.

With the “Background” layer selected press Ctrl+J to copy the layer and then change the Blend Mode on the copied layer to Multiply.

Now outside the main composition open the stock image of our female fashion victim. To maintain the integrity of the original image and avoid having to cut out our image again if any mistakes are made in the future we’ll save our fashion victim as a seperate document.

With the Pen Tool create a path around the outer edges of the female model including the box she’s sitting on. After you’ve made it around the outer edges create several more paths between her face and her earrings, her arm and her leg and between both her legs. Once your paths are drawn right-click on any one of them and choose Make Selection. Press Ctrl+J to copy the selection to a new layer.

Drag and drop the cut out of our fashion victim into the main composition. Change the name of the layer to “fashion victim” and place her towards the left side of the image as seen below.

Press Ctrl+J to copy the “fashion victim” layer, change the Blend Mode on the copied layer to Multiply and reduce the Fill to 50%.

Create a new layer below the “fashion victim” layer and name it “model shadow”. With the “model shadow” layer selected Ctrl+click on the “fashion victim” layer to create a selection. Fill the selection with black. Press Ctrl+D to remove the selection. We now need to distort the black model shadow by going to: Edit> Transform>Distort.

Position the top two corners as seen below.

Apply a Gaussian Blur with a radius of 40 pixels by going to: Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur.

Next apply a layer mask. With the foreground color of black select the Gradient Tool and draw a linear gradient mask from the head of the model’s shadow towards the model.

Select the “Background copy” layer and create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer above it. In the Hue/Saturation panel check Colorize, set the Hue to 0, set the Saturation to 48 and the Lightness to +10.

Create a folder above the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and name it “right border”. Inside the “right border” folder draw an elongated rectangle or long strip using the Rectangle Tool, which starts at the top of the image and goes to the bottom. With your new shape layer selected press Ctrl+J five times to duplicate the layer. Space them out equally leaving a small space between each. Now, starting with the first shape, seqeuncially change the the color of each rectangle to correspond with the colors on the fashion victims shorts.

Create a new layer inside the “right border” folder below the Shape layers and name it “right border gradient”. With a foreground color of black select the Gradient Tool and draw a linear gradient from the right border to about the fashion victim’s shoe.

Above the “right border gradient” layer create a couple of text layers to display your message. In this example I created two. The first says “Coming Soon!” using the Blackoak Std font and the second says “to an over-sized city near you” using the Copperplate Gothic Bold font with both set to 30pt. Rotate each of them counter-clockwise by going to: Edit>Transform>Rotate 90 degrees CCW. Once again change the color of each text layers to a color found on the fashion victim’s shorts.

Next, open both of the vector packs in Illustrator. Starting with the “splatters” copy and paste several or all of them from Illustrator to Photoshop above the “right border” folder as Smart Objects. I left the vector objects as their default colors, because they worked nice for this piece, but feel free to change them if you like. Place them around the models head, back and left arm. I placed mine in four seperate layers so that I’d have more control over the orientation and positioning of each of them.

Once you’ve copy and pasted all the vector splatters you want, move on to repeating the process with the floral vector pack spacing them out around the model. Again feel free to change the color of any of the vector objects before copying them to suite your needs.

Create a new folder above the “right border” folder and name it “vector art”. Move all your vector images into the folder.

Okay, okay, I know what your thinking…When are we gonna get to the 3D? Well, guess what? The moment has finally arrived! Time to bring your creation to life, so grab your 3D glasses and keep them close by your side.

First, turn off the visibility of the “right border” folder.

We know need to save the image as two seperate .jpeg/.png images. First leave the image as is and Ctrl+Shift+S or go to File>Save As to save the image. Save it somewhere you can access it easily because we’ll be using it in a moment. Give it a name of “fashion_victim_left”.

Next select the “fashion victim” and the “fashion victim copy” layers by selecting one and while holding Shift select the other. Press “V” to select the Move Tool. Hold Shift and press the left arrow key twice. Now as before press Ctrl+Shift+S or go to File Save As to save the image. This time give the image a name of “fashion_victim_right”.

Open both of the “fashion_victim_left” and the “fashion_victim_right” images. With the “fashion_victim_right” image open unlock the “Background” layer and give it a name of “right”. Press Ctrl+Shift+S and save it as a .psd with the name of “fashion_victim_anaglyph”.

Drag the “fashion_victim_left” image into the “fashion_victim_anaglyph” .psd and give the layer a name of “left”.

With the “left” layer selected lower the Opacity to 50% and you’ll notice the image of the girl becomes a little bit out of focus. Using the arrow keys nudge the “left” layer so that the image of the girl becomes clear again. Reset the Opacity on the “left” layer to a 100%.

Turn the visibility off momentarily for the “left” layer. Select the “right” layer and press Ctrl+L or go to Image>Adjustments>Levels to adjust the levels for the layer.

Select the “Red” channel from the dropdown menu and change the “255” in the Output Levels to “0”.

This will remove the red from the layer leaving you with a blue/green image.

Turn the visibility back on for the “left” layer. With the “left” layer selected repeat the process described in step 10, but this time for the Green and Blue Channels.

You should now have a “left” layer that is devoid of any Green or Blue as seen below.

Change the “left” layer Blend Mode to Screen.

Put your 3D glasses on. Press “V” to select the Move Tool and using the arrow keys move the “left” layer until the fashion victim model appears to pop from the background. My adjustments were as follows (Holding shift, press the right arrow four times and the down arrow once).

Depending on were you position your layer you’ll be left with an area that isn’t fully covered by the “left” layer as seen in the example below.

Press “C” to select the Crop Tool and crop out the areas which don’t overlap.

Create a new folder and name it “anaglyph”. Place both the “left” and “right” layers in the folder.

Back into the main composition, turn off the visibility for all the folders and layers except for the “right border” folder. Drag and drop the “anaglyph” folder into the main composition and place it below the “right border” folder.

The image will not fully cover the canvas, because of the small area which we cropped out. Press Ctrl+T to select the Transform Tool and scale it up until it covers the canvas again.

Woohoo!…Your 3D anaglyph image is know complete! Please feel free to add any additional text such as branding or a creative message to personalize it further. I hope you found this tutorial to be fun, useful and it brings you success in your design ventures.

Robsonbillponte666 ::

This week I award “Wallpaper of the Week” to Rob, a.k.a Robsonbillponte666, for his “Water” wallpaper. To create this wonderful wallpaper Rob used a variety of different techniques and several different programs incorporating elements from Cinema 4D, Illustrator CS4 and Photoshop CS4.

Maybe it’s my great affinity for water or the sheer simplicity by which he nicely conveyed a sense of depth in this image, but I love it. Since water is such an essential part of life, and most of us fuel our work days with things such as coffee and soda, let this wallpaper also be a reminder to grab a tall glass of the clear stuff every once in awhile!

Kelly Angel ::

This week I award “Wallpaper of the Week” to Kelly Angel for her “Deadly Nightfury Wallpaper”. The Deadly Nightfury is one of the most fearsome dragons known to the a colony of Vikings, in the movie “How To Train Your Dragon”, yet one young Viking by the name of Hiccup…Well, if you haven’t seen it I don’t want to spoil it for you.
