If you’re like many dedicated designers who work tirelessly around the clock to meet deadlines, you’ll no doubt find coffee stained papers and napkins amongst the clutter on your desk. Often these stains become sources of great inspiration. In this tutorial we’ll be creating coffee stains and turning them into a stylish poster inspired by my favorite coffee house, Java Nation.
Step 1
In this tutorial we’ll use both Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator CS4 to achieve the desired effect we’re looking for. First open a new document in Photoshop CS4 with a width of 11 inches and a height of 17 inches. Set the resolution to 300 pixels/inch and the color mode to CMYK.

Step 2
Next open up new document in Illustrator CS4 and open the symbols panel by going to Window>Symbols or pressing Shift+Ctrl+F11. Initially, a set a default symbols will be displayed which we’ll need to change. In the upper right corner of the symbols panel select the flyout menu.

Step 3
With the flyout menu open go to: Open Symbol Library>Grime Vector Pack. Within this vector pack you can see several effects resembling stains.

Step 4
Next we’ll drag a few of them out onto our art board in Illustrator. Resize and roughly position them were you’ll want them in your final example.

Step 5
After placing some stained effects where you want them, we’ll then select the star symbol. Hold shift and draw a star that will fit nicely within one of the cup stains and give it a weight of 7pt.

Step 6
Next we’ll open a nice worn piece of paper to use as our background in Photoshop and label it “paper”. To resize the paper layer to fit the canvas press Ctrl+T then while holding “Shift” click and drag the corners of the image until they meet the edges.

Step 7
In Illustrator with the selection tool draw a rectangle around all the artwork which will select it all. Press Ctrl+C to copy. Switch to the open Photoshop document and press Ctrl+V to paste the object.
Select pixels in the paste options, position, resize the stains to resemble the example below and title the layer stains.

Step 8
Next we’ll create a selection of the stains by holding Ctrl and clicking on the layer.

Step 9
With the selection of the stains layer, now turn off the stains layer. Select the paper layer and press Ctrl+J to create a new layer with that selection. If you momentarily turn the paper layer off you should see something similar to below. Be sure to turn the paper layer back on.

Step 10
With the new layer selected change the Blend Mode to Color Burn and reduce the Fill to 50%.

Step 11
Now to enhance our stain, double click on the layer, to add some layer styles. The first style we’ll apply is an Outer Glow. Change the Blend Mode to Color Burn. With the color selector, select one of the darker colors from the paper layer, I selected #964923. Then increase the size of the glow to about 50px.

Step 12
Next add an Inner Glow. Set the Blend Mode to Color Burn again and select a lighter color from the paper layer. I selected #ecc69c.

Step 13
Now it’s time to add some text. My text is on two separate layers so I could slightly rotate the “J” counter-clockwise. Once again with the color selector select a color from the paper layer and choose a font of your liking. For this example the font I’m using is “Blackoak Std”.

Step 14
Holding “Alt” click on the “fx” and drag it to each of the text layers to copy the layer styles.
Change the blending mode to “Color Burn” and reduce the Fill on the text layers to 33%.

Step 15
Within the layer styles for the text we need to make some slight changes. For the Outer Glow increase the Opacity to 100% and the size to 60px. For the Inner Glow increase the Opacity to 50%.

Step 16
We now need to make the stains pop a bit from the paper layer. Go to: Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation and reduce the Saturation of the paper layer to -40.
To increase the readability of the text you can use the stamp tool. With the paper layer selected press Alt+click to select lighter areas from the bottom of the paper and paint around the text.

Step 17
Next select the stained layer and press Ctrl+J to create a new layer. Change the Blend Mode to Multiply and reduce the Opacity to 50%.

Step 18
Repeat that process for both of the text layers and reduce the Opacity to 20%.

Step 19
Now open the image of the coffee cup and with the pen tool trace around the outer edge of the cup including the saucer. Create a selection and delete everything on the outside. To clean up the edges select the outer area of the cup and go to: Select>Modify>Contract. Contract the selection 1px. Then repeat the process except choose Feather and feather the selection 3px.

Step 20
Next open the image of the latte art and with the pen tool trace around the foam in the cup and create a selection. Press Ctrl+J to move the selection to a new layer and delete the background.

Step 21
Drag the latte art into the coffee cup canvas. With the foam layer selected press Ctrl+T and drag the edges to fit the cup. Feather the edges of the foam by 5px like previously described.

Step 22
Select both layers and press Ctrl+E to merge them. Drag and drop the new coffee cup into the poster and place it in the lower right hand corner .
With the coffee cup still selected we need to apply a layer style. Select the Drop Shadow and give it a Distance of 151px and a size of 70px.

Step 23
Above the coffee cup create a new layer and title it steam.

Step 24
Select the pen tool and draw a line that zigzags, starts at the cup and moves up the paper.

Step 25
With a foreground color of white select a soft brush with a diameter of about 100px. Reselect the pen tool and right click on the path and choose Stroke Path.
Select brush and check the box for simulate pressure. Then press “OK”. You can then right click on the path again and delete it.

Step 26
Apply a blur filter. Go to: Filter>Gaussian Blur and choose a radius of about 50px.
Drop the Opacity slightly on the steam layer and then repeat the process two or three more times.

Step 27
With the Rectangle Marquee Tool draw a rectangle just above the paper layer and fill it with #805332. Rotate it slightly counter clockwise and position it slightly of the screen.

Step 28
Change the Blend Mode to Color Burn and reduce the fill to 20%.
Copy some layer styles by holding Alt+click and drag the “fx” from one of the stained layers. We just need to make a few slight adjustments. Change the size of the Outer Glow to 150px. And for the Inner Glow increase the Opacity to 80%, change the color to #ba5f06 and increase the size to 150px.

Step 29
And now for the home stretch…Repeat the same process as above with more shapes, add your desired text in the same manner to ingrain your stain and enjoy!
