Saejin Oh Interview ::
Saejin Oh is a 26 year old freelance artist from South Korea who has already proven himself to be a brilliant illustrator and digital artist. This young artist, though modest about his accomplishments, has had the honor to be apart of some pretty amazing projects in his career so far and has ability to turn some heads in the art community.
A few minutes looking through his gallery at DeviantArt or taking some time to browse through tutorials on his blog and you’ll see what I mean. He’s done some awesome work for Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard Entertainment and UDON Entertainment and has had work in Image FX Magazine.
I hope you enjoy the interview with Saejin and if you’re as inspired by his work as I’ve been, please be sure to check out his work at DeviantArt or his blog and pay respect to this young and talented artist.

You are a young illustrator in your mid twenties who has become quite a master in the realm of digital painting, which obviously requires a considerable amount of time and effort. On average how much time each day do you devote to working on pieces and perfecting your skills?
SAEJIN::
I’m not so sure if that’s the case. Just strolling around the DeviantArt you can spot many artists that are younger and more talented than I. I feel as though I’ve only took my first step, and I’ve yet to see my last sentence.The time I spend on my art is rather irregular, but most of them do end up on DeviantArt – unless I’m contractually obligated to keep them off the internet or they are of poor quality. Thus what you see on my website is a pretty good indicator of how often I draw.
Each piece I draw takes up anywhere between 30 minutes and 48 hours. I don’t think I’ve done any piece that took up more than 48 hours work-time. I’m not a patient person.

When did you first gain interest in illustration and who or what have been some of your greatest inspirations?
SAEJIN::
Drawing was pretty much the first thing I did when I was born. I don’t think there was a single event that made me draw. I just did anyway.And although there were artists that I admired time to time, I haven’t seen an artist I felt the need to mimic. I however did draw a lot of Dragon Ball characters as a young kid though.

Not only is the product of your work great but you also have some very nice tutorials. Have you ever had any of your tutorials published or have you ever considered publishing them yourself?
SAEJIN::
Maybe, but I’m not professionally trained thus I don’t know any of the technical language a published tutorial would require. If there are people willing to pay me for tutorials anyway, I’ll take it. Meanwhile, I’ll keep the tutorials on my website for free.

You’ve created some awesome work for Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard Entertainment and UDON Entertainment and Image FX Magazine. Of all the contract work you’ve done over the years which project are you most proud to have done or been a part of and why?
SAEJIN::
I’m not a very excitable person. I don’t think there are any that I’m proud of. Well, especially since I know the stuff I’ll create tomorrow will be better than the one I made yesterday. It’s just the way of skill progression. Once you’ve made it past, it’s hard to look back.Even the stuff I drew yesterday makes me cringe. Just imagine what I think of the stuff I did years ago.
KDS::
Where would you like to go from here with your art and what things can people look forward to seeing from you in the future?
SAEJIN::
I’m planning to do a comic, like how Brian Griffin is doing a novel. Hopefully someday. I think it’s a killer story, but then everyone with their own crappy story thinks so too, so I guess I’ll know when I get mine out.
